Why Oberammergau uses accommodation zones

Oberammergau is a village, not a resort town. It has nowhere near enough beds to sleep everyone who attends a performance, and the shortfall is not marginal. During a season the surrounding region absorbs the overflow, which is why accommodation for the Passion Play is organised in zones rather than by individual hotel.

A zone describes how far from the theatre your group sleeps and therefore how long the transfer takes. It does not describe hotel quality: that is what the category is for. The two are chosen independently, and confusing them is the most common source of misaligned expectations when a quotation arrives.

Zone and category are two separate decisions

Zone answers the question how far. Category answers the question how comfortable. A group can sleep close to the theatre in a simpler property, or further away in a stronger one, and both combinations are routinely booked. What is not available is the assumption that closer automatically means better, or that a higher category guarantees a shorter transfer.

In practice the choice usually comes down to what the group values on the day of the play. Proximity shortens the return journey after a performance that ends late at night. Category shapes the rest of the stay.

What happens on the night of the play

The performance runs from the afternoon into the night with a long interval for dinner. By the time it ends, your group has been out for the better part of a day. The transfer back is therefore the part of the arrangement guests notice most, and it is worth setting expectations in advance rather than on the coach.

This is the single strongest argument for the two-night package. With one night, the day of the play is bracketed by arrival and departure. With two, the group sleeps before and after, and the play sits in the middle of the stay rather than at the edge of it.

Why we cannot name the hotel at the time of booking

Allocation is controlled by the Passion Play organisers, not by us and not by the hotels. Properties are assigned against confirmed ticket allocations, and the assignment is made closer to the season than most operators expect. We can confirm the zone and the category at the point of booking. The named property follows later.

This is normal for Oberammergau and applies to every operator working the event, including those who imply otherwise. What we will not do is name a hotel we do not yet hold, and then move your group when the allocation lands differently.

Groups may be split across properties

Where a group is larger than a single property can absorb, accommodation may be divided across two or more hotels, guesthouses or pensions within the same zone and category. We keep groups together wherever the allocation allows, but the final decision sits with the organisers and lies outside our control.

If keeping a group under one roof is non-negotiable, tell us at enquiry stage. It constrains which dates and zones we can work with, and it is far easier to plan around at the start than to repair later.

Rooming

Rooms are sold as double or twin. Where a single room is required, the practical solution is a double room for single use, or a suite for one person where available. Guaranteed single occupancy is best requested at the time of booking rather than added afterwards, since it consumes a room from the same finite allocation.

One point worth passing to your clients directly: describe these as double or twin rooms rather than double bed rooms. It prevents the most common complaint on arrival.
