Frequently asked questions
FAQ
The questions travel advisors ask most, grouped by topic.
General
What is the Oberammergau Passion Play?
One of the world's most renowned faith-based and cultural events. In 1633 the villagers of Oberammergau vowed to perform the story of Christ's Passion, Death and Resurrection every ten years if they were spared the plague sweeping Europe during the Thirty Years' War.
It is not a commercial production. The performers, musicians, choir, stage crew and volunteers are all residents of Oberammergau, continuing a tradition passed down for almost 400 years.
Is it only suitable for church groups?
No. Faith-based travellers are a significant share of the audience, but the play also draws cultural travellers, alumni groups, educational organisations, history enthusiasts, heritage travellers, multi-generational families and affinity groups.
Why is it called a once-in-a-lifetime experience?
It is performed once every ten years. Missing a season can mean waiting another decade. Combined with limited ticket inventory, that makes it one of Europe's most sought-after travel experiences.
Dates & schedule
Why must the performance date be selected first?
The date determines package availability, hotel availability, ticket inventory, transport planning and group allocation. Not every date offers the same package options.
What is the difference between the 1-Night and 2-Night package?
With the 1-Night package the performance falls on the arrival day. With the 2-Night package it falls the day after, which allows a more relaxed pace and time for sightseeing in Bavaria.
Why are two alternative dates required?
Availability depends on ticket and hotel inventory, room category, group size and zone. Every request must carry one preferred date and two alternatives. Requests without alternatives cannot be processed.
Which dates sell out first?
Opening night, closing night, weekend departures, holiday periods and peak summer departures.
Theatre & weather
Is the theatre indoors?
No. The audience seating is covered but the stage is open, which lets the Bavarian Alps become part of the performance.
Do performances continue in rain?
Yes, in most cases. Because the seating area is covered, performances usually continue in unfavourable weather. Weather-related cancellations are extremely rare.
What should guests wear?
Comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, a sweater or fleece, layered clothing and a small umbrella.
Are May and October departures colder?
Yes. Both should be planned for noticeably cooler temperatures, particularly during the evening part of the performance.
Accommodation
Can clients choose a specific hotel?
No. Reservations are made by accommodation zone, hotel category and room category. Specific properties cannot be guaranteed.
Are 5-star hotels available in Oberammergau?
No. There are no 5-star hotels within Oberammergau. All 5-star accommodation sits in Zone 2.
Can a double bed or twin beds be guaranteed?
No. Double rooms may contain one double bed or two twin beds, and the final assignment depends on hotel inventory. Preferences are passed to the hotel but cannot be guaranteed.
Transport
Do transfers depart from the hotel?
No. Guests use a designated departure point in their town or village. The hotel communicates the location and schedule on arrival.
Can private transfers to the theatre be arranged?
Generally no. Traffic restrictions and access controls during the season mean individual transport is typically unavailable. All guests use the official network.
Are airport transfers included?
No. Airport transfers are quoted separately. Transfer rates for Munich Airport, Munich city centre and group transport to the region will be published in 2029. Munich Airport (MUC) is the primary gateway.
Payment
How much deposit is required?
10% on confirmation. The allocation is secured only after confirmation from the Passion Play Office, invoice issuance and receipt of the deposit.
What happens if payment is late?
Late payment can mean ticket cancellation, hotel cancellation, release of the allocation and loss of deposits.
Can an allocation be reinstated after cancellation?
No. Deposits are governed by the applicable payment and cancellation terms.
Extensions
What are the most popular extensions?
Munich, the historic capital of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein Castle. Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace and the setting of The Sound of Music. The Romantic Road.
Can you arrange the rest of the itinerary?
Yes. Unique Germany builds tailor-made programmes throughout Germany. Austria and Switzerland are arranged through our parent company, Compass Tours Incoming.
