Unique Germany works with travel advisors, not with the public. If you look after clients who want to see the Oberammergau Passion Play in 2030, this page sets out what we handle, what stays with you, and what we need from you to quote accurately.
In short
We hold an allocation of performance tickets tied to accommodation. You bring the client; we secure the date, the seats and the beds, and quote you a package. You keep the client relationship and your margin.
Who we are
Unique Germany is a division of KATER MICE & TOURS GmbH in Munich. Our sister company, Compass Tours Incoming, has operated as a German destination management company since 1974 and handles tour operator business. We are partners of Virtuoso, Signature Travel Network and ensemble.
Practically, that means we are a ground operator with contracted inventory, not a reseller buying on the open market. The distinction matters for Oberammergau, where inventory is finite and allocated years in advance.
What we handle
- Performance tickets in the two highest categories, filed against your requested dates
- Accommodation in both zones, in category A or B hotels
- Dinner and breakfast as specified in the package
- Transfers, on request and quoted to your group size
- Extension programmes across Bavaria, and beyond it through Compass Tours Incoming
What stays with you
The client relationship, the sale, the pricing to your client and the travel documentation. We quote you a net or commissionable rate depending on how we contract with you; what you charge on top is your business and we do not interfere with it.
We also do not market to your clients. If a traveller contacts us directly and mentions your agency, we refer them back to you.
What we need from you
A request we can actually file with the Passion Play Office needs six things. Missing any of them means a delay while we come back to ask.
-
One preferred performance date plus two alternatives
The alternatives are not optional. A request naming a single date cannot be filed.
-
Approximate group size
A working number is enough at this stage; final numbers come later.
-
Package length
One night or two. If you are undecided, say so and we will quote both.
-
Hotel category preference
Category A or B. This is about comfort, not distance.
-
Rooming outline
Twins, doubles, single occupancy. Singles consume a room from the same allocation, so flag them early.
-
Anything unusual
Accessibility needs, dietary requirements, a group that must stay under one roof, a fixed arrival airport.
How your client experiences the day
The performance runs from the afternoon into the night, with a long interval for dinner. Guests are seated in a roofed auditorium facing a stage open to the sky. The play is performed in German; a text book is provided.
By the time it ends it is late, and the transfer back is the part guests remember most vividly. Where your group sleeps therefore shapes the whole impression. Our accommodation and zones page explains what each zone means in practice.
Selling points that close the booking
- It happens once a decade. A client who misses 2030 waits until 2040.
- Every performer is a resident of the village. This is not a touring production.
- The tradition goes back to a plague vow of 1633 — see the history.
- It combines naturally with Neuschwanstein, Munich and Salzburg, so the Passion Play anchors a full itinerary rather than being a standalone trip.
Questions clients ask, and how to answer them
“Can we choose our exact seats?”
No. Category can be requested, individual seats cannot. Groups are seated together where the allocation allows.
“Which hotel will we be in?”
Zone and category are confirmed at booking; the named property follows later, because allocation sits with the Passion Play organisers. Any operator promising a named hotel at booking is promising something they do not yet control.
“It is in German — will we understand it?”
A text book is included, and the staging carries much of the narrative. Most visitors report the language is far less of a barrier than expected.
“Eight hours is a long day.”
It is, and the three-hour interval exists for that reason. For older clients, the two-night package is the better fit because the day is not bracketed by arrival and departure.
“Can we book later and save money?”
Historically no. Early arrangements have not been the expensive ones, and late booking mainly costs choice — see ticket prices and costs.
How we quote, and where your margin sits
We quote net, per person, by package length, hotel category and zone. What you add on top is your business and we do not need to see it. Rates are held for the validity period stated on the quotation; beyond that they are subject to reconfirmation, because our own allocation is not indefinite.
Quotations are itemised so you can see what moves. If a client wants a cheaper number, you can see immediately whether the saving sits in the zone, the hotel category or the package length — and what it costs them in practice. That is more useful than a single figure you have to defend without knowing what is inside it.
Single supplements, tour leader arrangements and any free-of-charge ratio are stated on the quotation rather than left implicit. Ask about the FOC ratio when you request dates; it varies with group size and season.
Deposits and the payment schedule
Oberammergau does not work like standard group travel. Performance allocation is committed well in advance and is not returnable at will, so the deposit structure reflects a real commitment on our side rather than an administrative formality.
Expect a deposit on confirmation, one or more interim payments as the season approaches, and a final balance before travel. Exact amounts and dates are set out in the confirmation and in our booking terms. Nothing is invented at the last minute; if you know the schedule at the point of sale, you can build it into your own client terms.
The practical advice for advisors: mirror our deadlines in your client contract with a margin of a few weeks. Groups that pay you late are common; allocation that is released because a payment was late is expensive.
Names, rooming lists and changes
Numbers are booked first, names come later. That is the normal sequence and it is what makes group business workable — you can hold a realistic block before your clients have all committed.
What matters is the deadline for final numbers, after which reductions have a cost. Small changes in rooming — a twin becoming two singles, a late substitution of one name for another — are routine and we handle them without drama. Substantial reductions close to travel are a different matter, because the tickets and rooms were held for your group and cannot be resold at short notice.
- Provisional numbers at the time of request
- Confirmed numbers by the deadline stated in the confirmation
- Rooming list with names closer to travel
- Name substitutions accepted; headcount reductions subject to terms
If a client cancels
Cancellation terms for Oberammergau are stricter than for ordinary hotel-and-coach business, for one reason: the performance tickets are a fixed, dated, finite asset. A hotel room released in March can be resold. A ticket for a specific performance released weeks beforehand often cannot.
Be straightforward with clients about this at the point of sale rather than at the point of cancellation. In our experience groups accept it readily when it is explained early — the scarcity is precisely why they are booking years ahead — and resent it when it appears for the first time in a cancellation invoice. Travel insurance is worth recommending as a matter of course.
Working with us across a wider itinerary
Most groups do not fly in for a single performance. Oberammergau sits inside a Bavaria programme, a castles route, or a longer Germany and Austria itinerary, and the wider ground arrangements run through our sister company Compass Tours Incoming, a German DMC operating since 1974.
That means you can source the Passion Play element from us alone and build the rest yourself, or hand over the whole programme. Both are normal. What we would advise against is booking the performance through one supplier and the surrounding nights through another without telling either — the accommodation zones and the transfer timings on the performance day are interdependent, and the seams are where group itineraries break.
Timing
The decisive window for trade bookings falls in 2027 and 2028. Allocations reach operators well before the season, and the strongest dates commit first. An advisor who begins in 2030 is choosing from what remains.
Start a request
Send three dates and the details above through the request form. Nothing is binding until a deposit invoice is issued and paid. For the process end to end, see how to book; for rates, see packages and rates.
